About Lifestyle

For the defunct british television channel please see [Lifestyle (TV channel)].

In sociology, a lifestyle is the way a person lives. This includes patterns of social relations, consumption, entertainment, and dress. A lifestyle typically also reflects an individual's attitudes, values or [worldview].

Having a specific "lifestyle" means engaging in a characteristic bundle of behaviors that makes sense to both others and the self in different times and places. Therefore, a lifestyle can be used to forge a sense of [self identity] and to create cultural [symbol]s for the way a person is. The behaviors and practices within lifestyles are a mixture of habits, conventional ways of doing things, and reasoned actions.

In [business], "lifestyles" provide a means of [target market] consumers as [advertising] and [marketing] endeavor to match consumer aspirations with [product (business)]. Lifestyles refer to patterns in which people live, spend time and money. These patterns reflect by [demographics] factors (the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level and so on) that together constitute the mode of living of an individual or group); that include things such as the individual’s activities in addition to their interests. As a construct that helps consumers interact with their worlds, lifestyles are a subject to change every time. Consumer behaviour research uses lifestyle data to determine which consumers by products.

In [environmentalism], "lifestyles" are often associated with particular [ecological footprint]. Green lifestyles are those lifestyles that consume less of the planets resources then other types of lifestyles.

The term "lifestyle" first appeared in [1939]. [Alvin Toffler] predicted an explosion of lifestyles ("[History of subcultures in the 20th century]s") as diversity increases in [post-industrial] societies. Pre-modern societies did not require a term approaching [sub-culture] or "lifestyle", as different ways of living were expressed as entirely different cultures, religions, ethnicities or by an oppressed minority racial group. As such the minority culture was always seen as alien or other. "Lifestyles", by comparison, are accepted or partially accepted differences within the majority culture or group. This tolerance of differentiation within a majority culture seems to be associated with modernity and capitalism.

Within [anarchism], [lifestyle anarchism] is a belief that by changing one's own personal lifestyle, and by retreating from class struggle, an anarchist society can be formed.

The term "the lifestyle" can also mean what is more commonly called [swinging]. This term was first used in the early 1970s by ClubWideWorld, a swing club in Anaheim, California, for advertisements in the Los Angeles Free Press. "The Lifestyle" was a more inclusive and acceptable term for swinging. People in "the lifestyle" most commonly are a couple; often a married couple. They meet other like-minded couples or occasionally singles through various websites, private/ public clubs, and on tours to lifestyles friendly resorts, to engage in sexual acts/ activities. Not all lifestyle activities are sexual, as they may also meet to educate, support, or help others who are in "the lifestyle".

In politics The term lifestyle in politics is a reflection of the modern [Liberalism] idea that society ought to accept a variety of different ways of life, and hold people to no values other than those necessary to preserve the rights of others. This implies a rejection of the idea that our actions are to be judged against some standard of religious belief or faithfulness to tradition.

Questions and Answers

What IS a gay lifestyle?

Q) I've read quite a few posts on here referring to a gay lifestyle. Could someone please enlighten me because I'm really struggling with this one. I'm a straight female who has quite a few gay friends and the only observable difference between my lifestyle and theirs is that they fancy the same sex and I fancy the opposite sex. And as sexual orientation isn't a lifestyle choice that can't be what it means. So can somebody please explain and then I'll understand questions like 'I'm not homophobic but I don't approve of the gay lifestyle?' (which isn't really a question but a statement with a question mark on the end) and then I won't feel so ignorant. arielsalom33- so you mean hanging out and doing things that you like doing with ppl who enjoy the same things as you do? A bit like me who as a bodybuilder enjoys going to the gym, and hanging out with ppl who enjoys the same things I do? No sorry still don't understand what they mean. Why would anyone disapprove of that? It's none of their business. Ngumba R - and does the Quran also explain what a gay lifestyle is? Otherwise, your comment makes no sense. But why does that surprise me? Non entity 383 - so pretty much what happens in the straight community (do we have a community?) Mean Gene, Lucy_ritter & W E L Hung (i bet you're not) - Ah so that's what they mean. Do you think? No it can't be that because then they would'nt say 'I'm not a homophobe' they'd say I'm a puritanical prude' and they wouldn't say 'I don't approve of the gay lifestyle' they would say 'I'm so emotionally mal-adjusted that I cannot cope with the thought of two other human beings engaging in the act of making love to one another in whatever way they feel approriate even though I'm completely unaffected and it has got nothing to do with me.'

A) You're right. The only difference between you and a gay person is that they like members of the same sex. They work just like you do, have families just like you do, like to have fun just like you do. Its actually those opposed to homosexuality who call it a lifestyle as if its a choice. While some think that effeminate men represent all of homosexual guys, like the rest of the population, we are just as diverse as the rest of guys. You aren't ignorant. In fact, you are more illuminated than most.

A lifestyle TAX instead of National Insurance?

Q) Shouldn't anyone who just has a bad life style pay more for the NHS? If you drink too much, eat too much or just don’t do any exercise, should you pay more? With a ‘free’ NHS we will always make the' easy' choice when it comes to health. Will TAX unhealthy lifestyles reduce the cost of the NHS by increasing the number of people who take more responsibility for their health and reducing the number of ill people. And increase revenue, because with any overhaul of the NI tax system they will inevitable increase revenue. We have TAX bandings so why not this for NI? Some overweight people are overweight because of medical reasons, accept that this is a small proportion If a medical could be carried out on you by your GP to assess your lifestyle and put you into a category of NI contributions, would you agree?

A) As an 18st smoker, it's fair enough that I should pay more for the NHS. But why the hell should i fund your state pension too?

What is your culture/lifestyle/etiquette/nationality? Let's play a game,?

Q) I'm giving you 7 days to convince me to convert to your culture/lifestyle/etiquette/nationality.what are the positive and negative aspects of your culture/lifestyle/etiquette/nationality, and how would I overcome the negative aspects of that culture/lifestyle/etiquette/nationality if i were to convert? No nendlin, Im quite sure who I am and what Im about, Im just interested to see the rest of the people im sharing the planet with...so far their hostile!

A) my lifestyle doesn't want you, it's heterosexual, your being gay means more women for me.

Is a homosexual lifestyle a "sin" in Christianity?

Q) How can those who are in the Gay & Lesbian Christian movement justify Biblically the leading of a homosexual lifestyle? From my reading of the Bible, such a lifestyle is definitely ruled out. But interested in other views. And before anyone accuses me of homophobia I adhere to the tenet "Hate the sin, but love the sinner". I don't see any evidence that homosexuals are "born"; the science does not back this up. And to answer some of the people who have already accused me of being a bigot, not true. I have some friends and acquaintances who practice homosexuality and who know my views. I'd really just like an answer to my question - where is the Biblical; evidence in support of a homosexual lifestyle. Surely not too much to ask for, is it? I afree with Char ans Serah S. Homosexual behaviour is sinful, but like all sins can be forgiven. Of course for that to happen the sinner must first see his actions as sin and then repent.

A) Based on the Bible alone, homosexuality is sin. However, like every other sin that one whats to justify, scripture is distorted or ignored completely. I agree that it is not for us to set ablaze sinners for God will deal with that. As a believe in God and the Bible, one would be obligated to speak the truth from the scriptures. Romans Chapter 1 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Does 'swinging lifestyle' undermine English culture?

Q) A foreign friend of mine has studied English in his homeland for a long time. He loves English culture, and one of the things he was told was that the English are very conservative towards sex. A few months ago he had a chance to go to study in England. Incidentally, the press recently ran many articles about the popularity of the swinging lifestyle (having sex with someone other than one's partner) in London and some parts of England. What is perplexing is some newspapers even let readers know about the particular addresses of some swinging clubs. This kind of coverage seems to give swinging an aura of legitimacy, something people are proud of. My friend is very confused about this, and so am I. Do you think English culture has changed so much that swinging is now acceptable?

A) Is there any reason why it should not be acceptable? What I mean by that is if two people want to involve a third person into their relationship and it doesn't involve any of the no, no's such as kids or animals then what is the harm. Is it better for this to happen or for the guy to visit toilets for sex or a prostitute for arguments sake. Not saying it's right, just wondering if it's so wrong.

Does your lifestyle affect how long frangrances last on you?

Q) The diet you're on and lifestyle you lead must affect your bodily composition so that fragrances last mere minutes compared to some other healthier friends? It frsutrates me ~ is there a scientific reason?

A) yes i would think it does if your a runner you sweat alot more and your fragrance doesnt stay on as long but if ur just chilln wid your boys or girls it would probably last longer

Diet or lifestyle change?

Q) Hi. Im 18yrs old, Male and weigh 17st 2 (240 pounds approx.) and 6foot 1. I want to go on a diet but realise once i come off a diet the weight will come back on. Can anyone reccommend a lifestyle change as such and what to do with that. I really want to be about 13s/14st max. Is there anyone that can help. Thanks...

A) Ask a dozen people this question and you'll get a dozen different and often conflicting answers. BUT you're already half-way there because you understand that diets don't work. The only way to get and STAY fit, healthy and slim is to accept that your whole outlook on life has to change. Personally, I've lived a low-carb livestyle for almost all my adult life and it works great for me. Other people choose different routes. It's irrelevant, really. The most important thing is to incorporate exercise into your life and start eating healthily. Some people will suggest low-fat diets. Some will suggest low-carb. Some will tell you to go to weightwatchers etc... The truth is that EVERYONE knows what is a 'bad' food as opposed to a 'good' one. It's common sense. I defy anyone to say that chips, for example, are a valid 'good' food ever... and yet the odd chip isn't going to hurt you. So basically, cut all the crap out of your menu, eat good non-processed healthy food, exercise a lot and once, in a blue moon, treat yourself to something 'bad' too, because this isn't a diet you're planning to come off, it's the rest of your life. 'Plan' to be good 100% of the time, but then allow yourself to be bad SOME of the time, forgive yourself, move on, be fit, be happy.

IF homosexuality isnt a lifestyle ...?

Q) Then what is it?? A lifestyle is a way of life. If you are an alcoholic you live an alcoholic lifestyle. If you are a doctor you live a medical lifestyle. If you are an educator you live an educational lifestyle. If you are a heterosexual you live a heterosexual lifestyle. IF YOU ARE A HOMOSEXUAL YOU LIVE A HOMOSEXUAL LIFESTYLE> I am homosexual ... i dont take offense of the term lifestyle. I am pround of being a homosexual ... and I am proud of living life as a homosexual. I LIVE A HOMOSEXUAL LIFESTYLE> BTW ... this is in response to my previous question. Does a heterosexual live a heterosexual lifestyle you ask? Does a heterosexual marry a woman. Have children. Go around as a heterosexual couple. YES.

A) I am a professional percussionist. I live a percussionists' lifestyle. It doesn't have ANYTHING to do with who I'm in love with!! A heterosexual person leading a "heterosexual lifestyle"? That makes no sense. I disagree with you. edit: Hello? not ALL heterosexuals have kids! And then you have the gay and lesbian couples that DO. Your theory is full of holes. What about a FTM who marries a woman? Is that person leading a transgendered "lifestyle"? But wait, this person is now a male, so wouldnt it be a heterosexual "lifestyle" now? My point is, that one's lifestyle has nothing to do with who they love.

Discliplined Lifestyle?

Q) I was in the military, so I am both for and against a disciplined lifestyle. For it: It keeps you from being lazy. Against it: It's a lot of work. I truly believe that is the key. You just have to keep to an order in life. Some kind of ToDo list that never really ends. Things happened to stop me from living that kind of lifestyle. Nobody to exercise with. Nobody to live for. No real point to that type of lifestyle. (Just things that happen in life to keep you from sticking to the list.) It is a good thing to do IMO. What do you think?

A) Conforming to a strict structure in life can interfere with your creative and/or analytical process. Many people allow the military to dictate their actions because they don't want to think and act outside a strict sub-cultural code which the military provides. I, personally, prefer a free-thinking lifestyle which is not controlled in any manner, except for the abstract norms of the culture in which I live.

If homosexuality is a lifestyle, then--a religion is also a lifestyle?

Q) A lifestyle:is the way a person (or a group) lives. This includes patterns of social relations, consumption, entertainment, and dress. A lifestyle typically also reflects an individual's attitudes, values or worldview. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifestyle Homosexuality has been documented in nature, http://www.livescience.com/animalworld/061116_homosexual_animals.html and if it is in nature, so then being a homosexual is also natural. Homosexuality in humans has also been documented as well in are own human history (actual history not bible history) which was accepted in their culture & others. So...is a religion a lifestyle, yes/no & why? Then why all this discrimination if homosexuality is natural. Live life how you see fit. To: AMDG Like it or not, humans are animals, humans kill animals and humans, we kill, murder babies and people, start wars, even forced others into slavery, and yes, we still have cannibalism in the world, so yes, humans are animals in nature. I guest Misty040 didn't read the source I provided and didn't see the top 10 gay animals which also had female to female pleasures, next time try reading before answering.

A) Homosexuality pre-dates Christianity. It will also outlast it.

Lifestyle question?

Q) I have been reading various q&a's on here and some people say that they don't believe in certain lifestyles. How odd and uninformed. Am I to consider that I am righthanded and that is a lifestyle choice? Does that make any sense? That is not what I am saying. I guess my question should be how can people be so stupid or illogical? My righthand and I are happy. Thanks =) Be righthanded was never a choice. HuckleFairyHound is the prime example of the stupidity I mentioned. Being gay isn't about ramming anything, you dolt! χριστοφερως - Not typical or usual at all, is it? Like I said I was born righthanded and it was not a lifestyle choice. Just Too ... - I see you have asked a similar question in the past. When will people understand that being gay is as innate as eye color? Thank you for your insight.

A) What I can't quite understand is why people even call being gay a "Lifestyle" in the first place. My being gay isn't how I live my life. It's simply a PART of who I am, just as being left handed is part of who I am....or blue eyed, or brown haired. My LIFESTYLE or should I say my style of living is as a mother of a teenager, a partner, a daughter, a business owner/operator, a citizen of my country, my state, my county and my city. I work, I pay taxes, I purchase goods and services.

Must I accept the homosexual lifestyle? Can't I just accept WHO they are instead of WHAT they claim to be?

Q) Am I required, by society, to accept the homosexual lifestyle? I don't agree with the philosophy, lifestyle, and physical repercussions of homosexuality. I don't think it's natural or "right". I just don't agree with it. (Yes, I AM Christian and "Rightwing", but I tend NOT to judge people, oddly enough.) This is not to the offense of homosexuals. I have two great friends who are notedly bisexual. My political and religious views never enter these conversations, and I accept these people for WHO they are (good people), not for WHAT they are (GLBT). Does it make me homophobic, that I don't accept WHAT they are, but rather WHO they are? Is accepting the lifestyle as "okay" required to be "tolerant"? Can't I just accept the PERSON, without accepting what they ARE/DO? Here's the substance of my question: If I accept someone who is GLBT, but not the GLBT lifestyle/philosophy, am I considered homophobic? This is an honest question. Please, no bashing or flaming. I might not have worded my question in the easiest way possible, so, for clarity: *I do not accept homosexuality as "okay". *I accept homosexual PEOPLE, based upon their PERSONALITY, disregarding their sexual preferences. Does this mean that I am homophobic? Does the rejection of GLBT ideas/philosophy/lifestyle, but NOT the people, cause me to be a noted "hater" of GLBT individuals? (In short, am I a "hater"?) Cindy M: Cute, and thanks, but no thanks. I'm sixteen, and I'm saving myself for marriage. "Dominion over others"? I in NO way condone such a thing! All I'm saying is that I disagree with them, not that I hold dominance over them in ANY way, shape or form! Think of it this way: Say I met an agnostic. (I have.) We become good friends. (We have.) I don't agree with agnosticism. (I don't.) So, because I don't agree with agnosticism, I'm claiming DOMINANCE over them? Okay, in the same token, if a homosexual disagrees with heterosexuality, and accepts me, does he/she claim DOMINANCE over my preference? I fully condone that my way of life could be wrong. I AM, in fact, open to change. If there's UNDENIABLE evidence against what I think, I'll work to accept the better argument. But to claim that I think that my preference is DOMINANT is just bigoted. I just percieve that my preference is "right", I don't think it's "Dominant" over GLBT. Just because I don't think it's right doesn't mean I think it's subordinate.

A) If you asked me I would say NO you are not a hater. If you asked others they would probably tell you that because you mentioned the "c" word christian... That you are a hater. unfortunately most of the people who are shouting "Tolerance!" have a very narrow-minded view of what should be tolerated. Namely their point of view should be tolerated and all others are just "haters". If you except a person as a person you have in fact displayed in my opinion the character of Christ.... Call sin what it is and show the love of God without condoning that which is wrong.

They question of the gay "lifestyle."?

Q) I am not gay but I fully support equality for all people in the USA, including the right for homosexuals to marry. Too me the idea that we are having a debate about full rights for any group in this day and age is disturbing. But one thing that confuses me is when the gay community refers to a gay/lesbian lifestyle. I dont understand this I am Afican American, I was born that way just as I believe homosexuals were born homosexual. The lifestyle I live is based upon my values and choices. Sure my race may influence this but I am more than the color of my covering, just as being homosexual just an element of a homosexuals life and choices. To me, lifestyle makes it seem like being gay a choice, which it is not. Do you think that calling how you live lifestlye weakens your cause for full and equal rights under the law? Or is the use of the term Lifestyle a statement of militancy, like black people adopting the N word? Thanks for answering

A) Exactly, it's not a lifestyle, that's as stupid as saying the black lifestyle or the white lifestyle. I like the quote "I don't have a lifestyle, I have a life." It's not a choice, and gay people are a very diverse group of people, so there is no such thing as the gay lifestyle. It's a ignorant term.

Which lifestyle do you prefer more? An urban, suburban or country lifestyle? Explain why.?

Q) Be descritive and actually think about it. I prefer the suburban lifestyle because it is a cross between timid country life and bustling city life. I prefer the suburban life because it is not too chaotic, but not too timid.

A) Urban life I was brought up on a farm and I love the countryside but the thing with urban life is that five minutes walk from your door you can find all kinds of things to do. Good food of every variety, all kinds of entertainment, and a huge host of freinds wherever you look. Still enjoy a walk in the country though.

Vegetarian Lifestyle, how to keep it up?

Q) I have been living the vegetarian lifestyle for the past week, and I don't think I have ever been so hungry in my life. I find that I am eating a lot of things that I normally wouldn't eat just to not be hungry, like baked potatos. I did the vegetarian lifestyle for a couple of reasons, but I don't think I can keep it up if I have to keep going to be hungry. Is there anything that is healthier and can keep me satisfied?

A) The best way to begin a vegetarian life you can maintain is to get your own apartment. Just as it would be nearly impossible for an alcoholic to quit drinking while hanging out in a bar every day, it will be very difficult to stop eating meat in a home where it is constantly being served. In you own place you can do your own shopping and decide what food is served. If you live with meat-eaters, you can begin cooking some dishes. If you take the meat out of your fridge, near everything else is vegetarian. Surely you have pasta and things at your house? Another great thing you can do for yourself is to learn how to cook quick and simple meals. I too was never a big fan of vegetables… it has taken me time to find ways I like to eat them. When you eat good food you do not feel as though you are missing out. Often vegetarians look for vegetarian cookbooks. I use regular cookbooks and substitute the meat. Morning Star Farms has great vegan chicken and beef substitutes, and Ives has great vegan ground beef and lunchmeat substitutes. I personally love tofu. It is great for making Chinese food. Know which restaurants have good vegetarian substitutes for when you want to go out to eat. You CANNOT sill be hungry after eating sezhwan-tofu stirfry on a bed of noodles! Also, when we crave meat, we often crave the fat and grease. Fat is a highly addictive substance found in meat. You might *not feel satisfied* because yor body is wondering where the heck the fat is. A great fix is to cook a dish heavy in olive oil; you will get the fat you crave (but please don’t make a habit of it.) Also, read some great literature and get a support system. Join the vegetarian society or vegetarian web-blogs. These will help keep you connected to other vegetarians; they also keep you close to great recipes. Sometimes, knowing others like you are out there is a great help, especially if they have a lot of experience and tips to help you. Feel proud of your accomplishment. Here is the Vegan/vegetarian Food Pyramid so you can get an idea of the *optimal* diet. It also has a vegetarian starter kit. http://www.vegsource.com/food_groups.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I personally spent a few years feeling guilty about how animals were killed. One night I went to sleep and decided to stop, I woke up a vegetarian. The first few months were very difficult, passing up mom's bacon when i visited and passing up spicy chicken sandwiches. But I got past it. The best thing I ever did was learning how to cook. Fake meats were good for me too because I was actually quite fond of the taste of meat, I just couldn't face myself for eating it.
